Asian History Month – Asian Pirate Exhibition

8:00am - 5:00pm
Antilles Trading Company Pirate Museum and Store

Piracy has long been a pivotal and enduring element of maritime history in Asia, which was home to some of the largest pirate organizations ever documented. Pirates were active in Asian waters and on a larger scale than in the West. Historical Chinese records mention piracy as early as the 5th century BCE, with continued references throughout the annals of various dynasties and into modern times.

Beyond economic activities, pirates in Asia also assumed political roles. Like European privateers, Asian pirates at times formed alliances with territorial states, becoming instruments of state power used to challenge and weaken opponents. Asian pirates also formed their own political units and integrated into established coastal communities or founded new states.

Asia underwent a “Golden Age of Piracy” in the 17th and 18th centuries, marked by rampant piracy and maritime conflict across the Indian Ocean, South China Sea, and East Asian waters. This era featured numerous renowned Asian pirates who achieved notoriety comparable to figures like Blackbeard and Anne Bonny.

Come visit the Asian Pirate Exhibition and learn about important Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese and Indonesian pirates as well as their unique ships and weapons. Even learn about Headhunter Pirates!

Stay a while.
